Supreme Stromboli

My Supreme Stromboli tastes just like a supreme pizza all rolled up and served with a warm, marinara sauce. Use the technique in the recipe below and add all of your favorite pizza toppings!

Give me ALL the pizza!! I don’t care what’s on it (well…no anchovies or broccoli) and I don’t care what form it is in. I just LOVE pizza!

My Supreme Stromboli tastes just like a rolled-up slice of supreme pizza. I fill mine with pepperoni, sausage, green bell peppers, and lots of cheese and serve it alongside a bowl of warm marinara sauce.

What’s the difference between a calzone and Stromboli?

There are a few differences between these two delicious items.   First of all, the shape is different for both.  A calzone is like a stuffed, folded pizza.  It was created in Italy so people could walk around the streets holding their pizza.  Sounds like a genius idea to me!  Whereas a stromboli is rolled up like a jelly roll so you get all of the ingredients in each bite.  As far as the fillings go, a calzone usually contains ricotta cheese or a mix of cheeses including ricotta.  A stromboli only has mozzarella – never ricotta.   And for the sauce?  Calzones are always dipped into sauce but you won’t find any sauce inside the dough.   A stromboli can also be dipped into sauce but usually has a thin layer inside the roll as well.

Here’s how I make my Supreme Stromboli:

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  • Cook the Italian sausage and put it to the side.
  • Cut the green bell peppers into strips.
  • Roll the dough out into a rectangle.  Top the dough with some pizza sauce, then the shredded mozzarella, sausage, and green bell peppers. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning.
  • Begin rolling the stromboli up starting with the wide side of the dough (see pictures below).
  • Brush the top of the stromboli with an egg wash (1 egg mixed with a little water and stirred together).  Sprinkle with Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and some garlic powder.  Make 4-5 cuts down the stromboli.
  • Place stromboli on baking sheet and bake for 25-35 minutes or until top of stromboli is browned and crispy.
