Seared Tuna Wontons are my absolute favorite summer appetizer! If you have never seared tuna before, here’s a little rundown on how to do it. It’s SUPER fast and delicious (even for non-sushi lovers). My kids love this appetizer and will eat the tuna by itself without the wonton as well. It’s a great light lunch too!
You can throw this on the grill as well if you want.
How to Sear Tuna:
- Make sure to get the pan very, very hot!
- Drizzle a little olive oil into the pan and let it get so hot it is almost smoking.
- Coat the piece of tuna in olive oil and do a HEAVY coating of sea salt and course black pepper. Use more than you think you need.
- Put the tuna into the smoking hot pan and only cook for about 15-20 seconds on each side. You’ll see just the outside begin to cook while the inside stays bright pink. That’s what you want!
- Once you sear both sides, slice it very thin against the grain.
- Enjoy!!
Seared Tuna Wontons
Sushi grade tuna perfectly seared and served on a fried wonton, topped with avocado and sriracha mayo.
Ingredients
- 2-3 oz sushi grade tuna
- Wonton wrappers
- Vegetable oil
- Mayonnaise
- Sriracha hot sauce
- Salt
- Course black pepper
- Olive oil
Instructions
- Heat a medium skillet over medium heat. Add about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil to the pan. Once oil is hot, add wontons 2-3 at a time.
- Rinse the tuna under cold water and pat dry. Rub the piece of tuna with a little olive oil. Cover the top and bottom of the tuna with sea salt and course black pepper. Use a good amount of pepper.
- Heat another skillet over high heat.
- While your skillet is heating up, make your Sriracha Mayonnaise by mixing 1 part sriracha to 3 parts mayonnaise.
- When the skillet is very hot, add a tbsp of olive oil. When it begins to smoke, add the piece of tuna to the pan. Sear it about 15-20 seconds on each side. You don't want the inside of the tuna to cook - you just want to sear the outside of the fish. Once it is seared, thinly slice the tuna.
- To assemble, take a fried wonton and add a slice of seared tuna. Top with a thin slice of avocado and a dollop of sriracha mayo.
