March Quarantine Book Review

I don’t know about you but these last couple of weeks have given me a LOT of time to read some really great books!  I know I am always looking for suggestions from friends so I thought I’d pass along some of my favorites I’ve read lately.

Conviction – Denise Mina

  • Anna McDonald’s life is suddenly turned upside down when her husband announces he is leaving her and their family. As an attempt to get through the terrible time, Anna turns to a podcast exploring a murdered family and quickly realizes she knows one of the podcast subjects from her past. She becomes obsessed with solving the case and takes along a very unlikely partner as she follows the trail of the murder. As someone who is slightly obsessed with true crime podcasts myself, I understood Anna’s desire to explore and investigate the truth.

Date Night

  • A simple date night between a husband and wife turns into a disappearance of a young girl, an innocent woman ending up in jail, and a husband covering up many secrets. This novel explores the lengths a family will go to save and protect one of their own.

A House in the Sky

  • The House in the Sky was one of my favorite books I have read in years. I remember watching 20/20 and Dateline about Amanda Lindhout and her capture by Somalian militants. Her story will bring you to your knees as you feel the unbearable pain she endured at the hands of her kidnappers. She is the definition of a survivor and her story is beautifully written in A House in the Sky.

American Dirt

  • American Dirt is the story of a journey of a mother and son trying desperately to save their own lives. After a horrifying experience forever changes the lives of the Perez family, Lydia and her son, Luca, find themselves in a desperate journey to escape the cartel. The story follows their courageous and dangerous journey from Acapulco to the United States. As I read the book, I felt like I was a part of their journey as well and realized the desperation and sacrifice families endure to move their children to a safe life.  American Dirt was also one of Oprah’s Book Picks (and we all know Oprah does no wrong)!

The Family Upstairs

  • The Family Upstairs tells the story of a young lady who unexpectedly inherits a multimillion dollar mansion in a surprise inheritance. However, the secrets the mansion holds are deep and painful….and include murder. As she discovers who she was and what she was born into, many questions come to the surface. Was she born into a cult? Was it actually a loving family? And where do you draw the line between exploring your past and putting yourself in danger.
