ULTIMATE Ham & Cheese Sandwich

The ULTIMATE Ham and Cheese Sandwich filled with creamy, melted fontina, salty ham, mayo, dijon on ciabatta bread and grilled to perfection! This is perfect for a great lunch or an easy dinner with your favorite soup.

Our girls love grilled ham and cheese sandwiches for lunch.  Deli ham and “fake” cheese (those cheese singles that kids just love) on white bread pretty much sustained them when they were really little and very picky about food.  I always knew they’d eat a ham and cheese!

Fast forward a few years and we’re – thank goodness – past the nasty fake cheese.  Now we do what we call “fancy” sandwiches.  We use good, fresh-baked bread and delicious cheese.   In the winter, a fancy sandwich with some tomato soup or their favorite chicken noodle soup is often times dinner for us.

To make our ULTIMATE Ham and Cheese Sandwich, use the freshest of the below ingredients you can find.  And don’t be afraid to switch it up a little.  What makes a great sandwich is enough moisture to balance the bread (mayo, aioli, mustard, pesto, etc.) and ingredients YOU love!

Ingredients:

  • Ciabatta – I love buying the ciabatta rolls in the bakery at the grocery store.  If you can’t find the rolls, buy a full loaf and just cut half of it into 4 pieces.   You could also use focaccia.   Here’s my favorite focaccia recipe – super easy and SOO good!
  • Fontina – I love fontina because it melts well and is so creamy!  If you don’t have fontina, you could use gouda, mozzarella, or even white cheddar.

Ingredients

  • 1 ciabatta roll, cut in half
  • 5-6 slices of fontina, sliced
  • 2-3 oz deli ham
  • 1 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp dijon mustard
  • butter

Instructions

  • Cut the ciabatta roll in half. Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on both sides of the bread. Spread dijon on one side.
  • While you are getting the ham and cheese sliced and ready, heat a small skillet over medium heat.
  • Add 3 sliced of fontina to one side of the bread. Top with 2-3 oz of ham and then 2 more sliced of cheese. Top with the other side of the bread.
  • Butter both sides of the sandwich and put the sandwich in the skillet. Press the sandwich down with your hands a little. Cover the skillet with a lid so the cheese will melt. After a couple of minutes, flip the sandwich to brown the other side. Make sure the cheese is melted. Cut in half and enjoy!
