Made-at-home Italian Sandwich
Gourmet sandwiches are one of my favorite things! We go to a local deli near our house that always has the BEST sandwiches made with fresh, quality ingredients. Now that we can’t GO anywhere and our deli is closed for the time being, we decided to try to recreate our favorite Italian sandwich at home (desperate times call for desperate measures). We did a pretty good job and will definitely make this again!
To start, I got the delicious spicy oil cooking. Add 1/4 cup of olive oil to the pan, your sliced onions and red pepper and add a good pinch of red pepper flakes. You are basically creating a flavored oil. Don’t get the heat too hot. Just let it soften the veggies while the red pepper flakes flavor the oil.
While the oil was cooking, I took a great sub roll and scooped out some of the excess bread. I don’t really know why people do this but it seems like all sandwich-makers do so I followed suit!
I then added all of the toppings to the bread and left it open-faced so I can toast it.
I put the sandwich in the toaster oven and toasted it for about 3-4 minutes – just to warm it up and melt the cheese a bit. This is the finished product. MMMMMM!!!

- On one side, place half of the meat, lettuce, and tomato slices. On the other side, place the rest of the meat and top with the cooked onions and peppers.
- Using a spoon, drizzle some of the flavored oil over each side of the sandwich.
- Top with a small drizzle of red wine vinegar, a sprinkle of Italian seasoning, and a small pinch of red pepper flakes (if you like the heat).
- Leaving the sandwich open, toast for 2-3 minutes.
