Fried Goat Cheese Pillows

Fried Goat Cheese Pillows are little bites of pure heaven!  I roll goat cheese in a wonton wrapper, fry it in a little oil, and drizzle it with honey and lots of pepper.  These are not only a delicious appetizer but a beautiful, sophisticated started to any meal!

Before we had kids, my husband & I loved to go out to new places for dinner.  We lived in midtown Atlanta in a trendy, industrial loft and walked everywhere to try new restaurants and bars.  My, how times have changed!!  Now, living in the suburbs and not our loft, when we actually get a free date night, we don’t want to venture far and usually end up at our favorite neighborhood place.  It’s perfect for where we are in life right now.  But eventually I promise myself we’re going to get back to those new, trendy places.

One of our favorite restaurants in Atlanta that we found in our “cool” days was a little placed called Ecco and they served these delicious fried goat cheese balls.  I tried many times to make them but it was always a complete fail…..until I found a wonton wrapper (which are my new go-to for SO many recipes these days….more on that in a separate post).   I call these Fried Goat Cheese Pillows….because they look more like a soft, fluffy pillow.

Here’s how to make Fried Goat Cheese Pillows:

  • What you need:
    • wonton wrappers
    • goat cheese
    • vegetable oil or olive oil
    • honey
    • salt and pepper
  • Instructions:
    • Heat a thin layer of oil over medium heat in a small skillet.
    • Lay a wonton wrapper on a flat surface.
    • Fill the center of the wrapper with a small spoonful of goat cheese.
    • Fold the side closest to you over the goat cheese and repeat with the opposite side.  Dip your finger in a little water and rub along the edge of the wrapper to seal it shut.  Fold both sides of the wonton over (kind of like wrapping a gift).
    • When the oil is hot, add the wontons to the oil.  Cook quickly on each side until they have browned slightly.  Don’t overcook or the cheese will melt out of the wonton.  You just want a light brown crisp on the wonton.
    • Remove them from the oil and add them to a small plate.  Drizzle with honey and then sprinkle with a little sea salt and black pepper.

      Ingredients

      • 8-10 wonton wrappers
      • 4 oz goat cheese
      • 1/4 cup vegetable or olive oil
      • honey
      • sea salt and pepper

      Instructions

      • In a small skillet, heat a small layer of oil - about a 1/4 of a cup depending on the size of the skillet - over medium heat. You want the oil to cover the bottom of the pan but not be deep.
      • Lay a wonton wrapper on a flat surface. Take a small spoonful of goat cheese and put it in the center of the wrapper. Fold the side closest to you over the goat cheese and then fold the opposite side over that. Dip your finger in a little bit of water and rub the inside of the wrapper to seal it together.
      • Fold in the sides of the wonton like you are wrapping a present. Seal with a little water again.
      • Fry the wontons in the oil until they are lightly browned on each side. Remove from oil, drain on paper towel and then transfer to a plate.
      • Drizzle the goat cheese pillows with honey and sprinkle with sea salt and black pepper.

I’m def making these for Xmas. We had Goat Cheese Pillows on Captiva Island FLA and I’m forever hooked. I don’t know their recipe but this sounds delish. I will top with Strawberry balsamic glaze. Will post how they come out!!
