Easy Homemade Calzones

Easy Homemade Calzones are a perfect lunch, quick dinner, or a great item for a kid’s lunch box.  With a few easy-to-find ingredients, these calzones are ready in about 20 minutes and can be made with your family’s favorite pizza toppings.

In our family, ANY night is a good night for pizza! But sometimes we get a little bored with the same old delivery pizza.  We change it up by keeping the pizza taste but putting the ingredients inside the dough in a calzone instead.  I try to always have a roll of pizza dough available when we need a quick, delicious dinner!

Fill these Easy Homemade Calzones with whatever ingredients you like best – pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, veggies, chicken, spinach, feta, etc.  Pizza dough, a little tomato sauce (it only takes a little), shredded cheese and a baking sheet are all you need to make these quick calzones.

Here’s how to make Easy Homemade Calzones:

  • If using sausage, chicken, or ground beef, cook the meat through and set aside.
  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees.  If using a pizza stone, put it in the oven and let it heat up.  If you don’t have a pizza stone, you can flip a baking sheet upside down and use it as a makeshift pizza stone.
  • On a floured surface (I use my counter), spread out your pizza dough.  The pizza dough I like to use is a rectangle shape.  I cut it in half and make 2 calzones out of it.  If you’re using a round dough, you can also cut it in half or use the whole thing for a large calzone.
  • To make the calzone, fold one side of the dough over the ingredients once the calzone is filled. Spread sauce on one half of your dough leaving about 1/2 inch on all sides.  Top with mozzarella cheese, your preference of toppings, and a little more mozzarella on top.  Fold the other half of the dough over the ingredients.  Roll the sides of the calzone up and pinch, making sure all sides are sealed.
  • Brush the top of the calzone with olive oil, sprinkle with some grated parmesan, and poke a few holes in the top with a sharp knife.
  • Slide your calzone onto a wood or metal pizza peel (fancy word for a large spatula used to slide pizzas/calzones in and out of an oven) and slide it onto the pizza stone in the oven.
  • Cook for 15-20 minutes or until the dough is brown and crispy.

Equipment

  • pizza stone

Ingredients

  • 1 pre-made pizza dough
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella
  • 2-3 tbsp pizza sauce
  • Optional toppings: pepperoni, sausage, ground beef, veggies, grilled chicken, olives, feta, etc.

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees. If using a pizza stone, put it in the oven and let it heat up as well. If you don't have a pizza stone, you can flip a baking sheet over and use it as your stone.
  • On a floured surface, roll out your pizza dough. Cut it in half if you're making 2 smaller calzones. Put one piece to the side while you make the first calzone.
  • On half of the dough, spread the pizza sauce. Top with shredded mozzarella cheese, top with any ingredients you like, top with a little more shredded cheese and then fold the other side of the dough over the ingredients, covering them completely. Roll the edges of the calzone over and pinch, sealing the calzone.
  • Brush the top of the calzone with olive oil, sprinkle with grated parmesan cheese, and poke a few holes in the top of the calzone with a sharp knife.
  • Repeat with the 2nd calzone.
  • Using a large pizza spatula, transfer the calzones to the hot pizza stone in the oven.
  • Cook for 15-20 minutes or until the top of the calzone is browned.
