Homemade Cuban Sandwich

My Homemade Cuban Sandwich combines ham, turkey, provolone, mayo, mustard, and pickles for a slight twist on the classic Cuban.  Make it as a large sandwich for lunch or as a slider for a great kids’ lunch item or game day appetizer.  You can’t beat the flavors in this classic sandwich!

A great Cuban Sandwich is one of the best things in life to me!  When we go to Florida for vacation, we have our favorite Cuban sandwich spots and can’t leave to come home until we’ve had this delicious, authentic sandwich.

A traditional Cuban sandwich is made with ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, yellow mustard, and pickles and grilled on Cuban bread.  Since I don’t have a lot of time to make my own roasted pork anytime I want a Cuban sandwich, instead I buy pre-made shredded pork in the meat department of my grocery store.  It makes for the perfect Cuban Sandwich every time!!

How to make my Homemade Cuban Sandwich:

  • The bread might be the most important part of a Cuban.  Our grocery store sells Cuban bread and that’s what I always use. However, if you can’t find Cuban bread, you can substitute in French bread or ciabatta.  Whatever you’re using, slice a large piece of the bread on a diagonal and then cut it in half so you have a top and a bottom.
  • Spread mayo on both sides of the bread and then spread yellow mustard on one side.
  • Layer with cheese on both sides and then pile on the ham, pork, and pickles.  Top with the other side of the bread.
  • Heat a grill pan (or regular grill) over medium/high heat.  Place a small amount of butter in the pan and let it melt.  Put the sandwich in the pan and press it down with something heavy.  I like to use another pan with a large can of something sitting on top.
  • Once the sandwich has cooked on one side, flip it over to the next and top with the pan again and push down to get nice grill marks on the sandwich.

    Ingredients

    • 1 loaf of Cuban bread
    • 3 oz deli ham
    • 3 oz pre-cooked, shredded pork (found in the meat department of most grocery stores)
    • 2 slices of provolone cheese
    • 1 tbsp mayonnaise
    • 1 tsp yellow mustard
    • 4-5 hamburger dill chips
    • 1 tbsp butter

    Instructions

    • Cut a large section of the bread on a diagonal and then cut it in half so you have a top and a bottom. Spread mayo of both slices of the bread and then mustard on one side.
    • Place one slice of provolone cheese on each side of the bread.
    • On one side, layer the ham and shredded pork. Top with the pickles. Close the sandwich.
    • Heat up a grill pan or regular grill over medium/high heat. Spread a thin layer of butter on both sides of the sandwich and place the sandwich in the pan. Top the sandwich with something heavy like another heavy pan so the sandwich is pressed between the 2 pans.
    • Grill on both sides. Remove from the pan, cut in half on a diagonal and enjoy!

  1. I prefer provolone cheese on my Cuban sandwiches as well. I have also been known to add lettuce and tomato.

  2. David Walker

    Swiss not provolone
