Add oil to a small skillet. Add enough to come about 1/2 inch up the side of the pan. Heat the skillet over medium high heat.
Have a small bowl beside your stove ready for the hot tortillas.
When oil is hot, lay one tortilla in the oil. When it begins to bubble, flip it over. Cook until you begin to see a little color on the tortilla. This is a very fast process. Don't let the tortilla harden.
Remove the tortilla from the oil while its still pliable and push it into the bowl.
Sprinkle it with salt. If the bowl is too soft, put it in a toaster oven (or regular oven) and toast before using for just a couple of minutes. Fill with your favorite taco salad ingredients!
