The BEST Spicy Chili

Georgia Girl Kitchen
This chili recipe is delicious and can be tweaked for a lighter version (my favorite way to make it). If there's something in the chili you don't care for, leave it out - and if there's an ingredient you love in your regular chili, throw it in. That's the beauty of chili....it can be whatever YOU love.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs ground turkey
  • 1 lb hot Italian turkey sausage
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic minced
  • 1 jalapeno chopped (optional)
  • 1 serrano pepper chopped (optional)
  • 2 15 oz cans of medium chili beans drained
  • 1 15 oz can of mild chili beans drained
  • 1 15 oz can of hot chili beans not drained
  • 1 28 oz can of diced tomatoes
  • 1 28 oz can fire roasted tomatoes
  • 1 6 oz can of tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup chili powder
  • 1 tbsp cumin
  • 1 tbsp oregano
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 1/4 cup light beer
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
  • Texas Pete hot sauce
  • sour cream
  • shredded cheese
  • saltine crackers Fritos, tortilla chips, etc.
  • salt and pepper

Instructions

  • Brown the ground turkey. Remove the sausage from casings and add it to the turkey as well.
  • Once browned, add chopped onion, red and green bell peppers, and garlic.
  • Add the cans of beans, tomatoes, and tomato paste. Stir well.
  • Add chili powder, paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper. Stir well and then add the 1/4 cup of beer. (You can use water if preferred.)
  • Let the chili sit and simmer for 30-45 minutes or longer.
  • At this point, I usually take out 1/3 of the chili and add it to another pot to simmer separately. This is the kids chili - aka, the non-spicy chili. If you like a mild chili, you don't have to separate but can instead serve the chili just like this.
  • If you like a spicier chili like me, you can add one chopped jalapeno and one chopped serrano - as well as the cayenne pepper - and let it all simmer.
  • *I find the serrano pepper is not as spicy as a jalapeno but does give good flavor. If you are making the mild chili, you can still add this pepper and your chili will not be spicy. *
  • I love saltine crackers with my chili but that's just because that's what I grew up eating with chili. Add you favorite toppings and crackers/chips. Enjoy!
